About us

About The Social Tenant

We believe every tenant deserves clear information and free tools to stand up for their rights — no jargon, no cost, no catch.

Who we are

We are a small, dedicated team with backgrounds in housing law and property. We started The Social Tenant because we saw first-hand how many council and housing association tenants struggle to get the help they need — not because they lack the right to it, but because the system makes it hard to know where to start.

We are not a law firm or a housing charity. We are a group of people who care about tenant rights and wanted to build something genuinely useful.

What we do

We provide free letter generators and plain-English guides designed specifically for social housing tenants in England and Wales. Our tools cover the issues that come up most often:

  • Reporting repairs and chasing landlords who have not acted
  • Complaining about damp, mould, and unsafe living conditions
  • Escalating complaints through your landlord's formal process
  • Referring unresolved complaints to the Housing Ombudsman
  • Understanding your rights around eviction, Section 21 notices, and more

Every letter template on this site is free to use, runs entirely in your browser, and does not store your personal information.

Why we built this

Too many tenants do not know their rights. Others know something is wrong but struggle with the formal language needed to get their landlord to act. We have seen people live with serious damp for months because they did not know how to put a complaint in writing. We have spoken to tenants who gave up on repairs because the process felt overwhelming.

We built The Social Tenant to change that. Our letter generators guide you through each step in plain English, and our guides explain the law without the legal jargon. We want to make it as simple as possible for you to hold your landlord to account.

Our commitment

We take accuracy seriously. All of our content is reviewed for correctness and references the relevant UK legislation — including the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985, the Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act 2018, and the Housing Act 1988.

Important: The information on this site is general guidance only and does not constitute legal advice. If your situation is complex or urgent, we always recommend contacting Shelter, Citizens Advice, or a qualified housing solicitor.

We are committed to keeping this site free, up to date, and genuinely helpful. If you spot something that needs correcting or have a suggestion for a new tool or guide, we would love to hear from you.
